Q4 2023 Emergency Medicine Services Update

The Emergency Medicine Services (EMS) sector continues to see strong deal flow with a sustained volume of bolt-on acquisitions by hospital / health systems. These scaled organizations remain eager to grow market share and expand into more rural markets with the intent to drive inpatient admissions and surgical volume, both critical revenue sources for health systems.

Most notably, HCA Healthcare continues to execute on its growth plan to invest billions into its EMS footprint. The for-profit hospital system has added over 100 free-standing emergency departments in the last 10 years with over 50 sites under construction as of November. In May, HCA announced its agreement to acquire 41 urgent care centers in Texas from FastMed Urgent Care.
